The Devil and Tom walker's Bargains
Tom Walker was a man with a Miserly life. I know this because the author directly said ''he is miserly''. Tom also was a caution and brave man. The author indirectly told us that Tom walks home late without fear of anything. The morals of Tom was strict as well. The author also indirectly made it clear that Tom didn't give in as quick as any other
The Wife of Tom Walker was also miserly and had a bitter heart. I know this because the author directly made it know that ''anything she lay hands on she hid it away''. I could also infer that Tom's wife and Tom physically fought. This is a well know fact because the author told us, the wife has a ''ranged temper, loud, and strong armed''. I could infer from this because we were told the wife is heard outside the house. Tom and his wife didn't have a wealthy life. I can infer this because the text directly said the house was ''forlorn looking and stood alone''.
In this part of the story the black man known as the Black Wood Smith was set out to trap Tom Walker, and his wife. I can infer from this based on the talk Tom had with the Black Wood Smith. I also view the Black Smith as a spirit, it was known because the author informed us that he appeared from out of nowhere. I could infer that he wasn't any color because the text directly said he was not black or white of any color. The man who clearly kept appearing in the woods was there to capture peoples souls, and mind. He was also known for making bargain's with people he came in contact with.
Clearly the theme of the story is having Ill Gotten gain. I chose this theme because Tom Walker was a man of greed. The author told us that Tom Walker was an UN wealthy man who made bargains with others to increase his wealth. Tom also didn't give back to anyone, he even got over on his friend of many years. I can infer that Tom tried to play both sides by being a religious man, but make bargains with the devil. Tom was caught off guard one days and the devil came and snatched him away, form all the things Tom tried to accomplish so in the end he still ended up with nothing lesson learner don't be ill gotten.
